Samsung is set to unveil a brand-new Galaxy S model, notable primarily for its slim design. The unveiling of the Galaxy S25 Edge, a model featuring an ultra-thin chassis, will occur from Monday night to Tuesday. Samsung had previously showcased a prototype of this model last January. This launch marks the beginning of a new battle to determine who can produce the slimmest phone, as Apple is also expected to introduce its own slim phone models in the fall.

Beyond Slimness,” proclaims the invitation to the event. Samsung remains tight-lipped, but its ambitions for the Edge are high:

This is far more than just a slim smartphone. Every curve, edge, and component represents a breakthrough in precision engineering designed to deliver a premium experience worthy of the Galaxy S series. The Galaxy S25 Edge doesn’t just set a new standard for what you can achieve with your smartphone. It heralds a new era of growth for the mobile industry.

However, Samsung does reveal one feature: a 200-megapixel camera, as is found in its high-end Galaxy S25 models. The prototype displayed at the beginning of the year indicated that the Galaxy S25 Edge would feature two camera lenses, in contrast to the single lens expected on the iPhone “Air.”

The key attributes of thickness and weight remain undisclosed. Rumors suggest the Samsung might be 6.4 mm thick (compared to 7.2 mm for a standard Galaxy S25), while the iPhone might slim down to 5.5 mm at its thinnest point (in both instances, the camera bump will protrude from the chassis).

Performance, battery life, price… there’s still much to learn about these devices, and the reveal of the Edge will provide some clues about what to expect from Apple. It will be interesting to see how, starting with the same goal of creating the thinnest phone possible, the two competitors have negotiated the inherent challenges, what compromises have been made, and what choices have been prioritized.
