WhatsApp has introduced a new privacy layer that restricts sharing content outside the platform, ensuring that “everyone in the chat can be confident that what is said stays within the conversation,” the company stated.
The feature is named Advanced Chat Privacy and is accessible for both individual chats and groups.
When this setting is enabled, users can prevent others from exporting chats, auto-downloading content to their phones, or using messages for AI functionalities.
“We believe this feature is perfect for groups where members may not know each other well, but where discussions are sensitive, such as discussing health issues in a support group or organizing your community for something significant,” the platform mentioned in an official blog post.
This new setting is available to all users who have the latest version of WhatsApp.
To activate this feature, simply tap the chat name where you want to apply it and select the Advanced Chat Privacy option.
WhatsApp explained that this is the initial version of the feature and plans to add more over time to include additional safeguards.
This setting joins others such as end-to-end encryption, which ensures that only the sender and recipient can view and share the chat’s content. It also includes temporary messages and functions to restrict chats.
Recently, the company now under Meta also announced that it would integrate Private Processing, a new infrastructure to enable AI usage on the platform without compromising end-to-end encryption.
This technology will allow users to request features like message summaries or writing suggestions, if requested. The service will not store messages after processing and has been designed to withstand both internal and external attacks.
