Xiaomi is set to roll out a significant update soon that will enhance a key feature of the camera system on its smartphones. However, not all models will be eligible for this update. We have compiled a list of these models in this article.

Xiaomi smartphones are highly regarded for their photographic capabilities, currently among the best in the market. The Xiaomi 17 Ultra has once again raised the bar with its massive camera module, making it the best in the manufacturer’s history. However, if you own an older model, you might be able to get close to this performance.

According to our colleagues at XiaomiTime, an update that enhances photo processing on Xiaomi smartphones will soon be rolled out. Specifically, this update will enable the LOFIC 4K FPS feature on compatible models. LOFIC (Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitors) is an imaging technology based on HDR that enhances light processing at the moment of capture.

Which Xiaomi smartphones will see improved photography?

In essence, this technology enhances the image contrast during capture, while maintaining a high level of detail in both very bright and very dark areas. Video quality will also benefit, becoming much more realistic to the human eye. This is great news for all photography enthusiasts who own a Xiaomi smartphone…

…unless they own a Xiaomi 15 or an earlier model. Unfortunately, these models lack the necessary hardware components, namely CMOS sensors, to benefit from this update. Therefore, their photo quality will remain unchanged after the update. Nonetheless, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra and Xiaomi 15 Ultra continue to excel in photography. The absence of LOFIC technology should not be too noticeable.

The update is expected to be rolled out over the course of January. XiaomiTime reports that it should be available within a month at the latest.
