WWDC: Apple to Focus on On-Device AI: Expect Big Announcements!

Upcoming Innovations at Apple’s WWDC on June 8

At the forthcoming Worldwide Developers Conference scheduled for June 8, Apple is expected to highlight the capabilities of its devices to execute artificial intelligence models locally. This information, according to a report by The Information, emphasizes the cost-effectiveness and privacy benefits of this approach compared to traditional data center reliance seen in other companies. In partnership with Google, Apple has reportedly developed lighter versions of Gemini that can operate locally on its devices through a process known as distillation, on which the company is placing significant emphasis. Furthermore, Apple is considering the acquisition of startups to speed up its work in this area, with a potential purchase of Liquid AI being discussed.

The Continued Need for Remote Servers

Despite these advancements, Apple is not yet in a position to completely abandon the use of remote servers. The Information again confirms that Apple Silicon servers under the Private Cloud Compute initiative are not powerful enough to run Gemini effectively on their own. Consequently, Apple relies on Google Cloud for this purpose and has recently approved the use of Nvidia’s technologies to enhance processing capabilities. This move incurs additional costs but also improves privacy protection. Despite these external dependencies, Apple plans to retain the “Private Cloud Compute” name, even though it deviates from the original promise of a fully internally-managed infrastructure.
