No longer do you need to ask your friends for a recap of a missed group chat or slog through dozens, if not hundreds of messages; WhatsApp’s AI will now summarize it for you.

Who hasn’t felt overwhelmed by the avalanche of unread WhatsApp messages piling up? Not everyone has the time or desire to catch up on all the missed message traffic, and it seems the app’s developers are aware of this issue. They are currently developing a feature that will summarize chat conversations for you.

This feature, which naturally relies on artificial intelligence, was spotted in a beta version (2.25.15.12) of WhatsApp by WABetaInfo, a source that has consistently been reliable in revealing upcoming app features. When a user receives multiple new messages in a conversation, a button labeled “Summarize with Meta AI” will appear, offering a summary of unread messages and saving valuable time.

WhatsApp Summarizes Your Chats Using AI

This functionality is likely to be particularly useful for very active group chats. One can easily accumulate hundreds of unread messages if daring enough to not check WhatsApp for half a day; this new feature is a welcome tool to quickly catch up on what has been discussed.

The concern regarding security arises. WhatsApp will use its Private Processing technology to secure data. This means that the message content is processed entirely within a protected environment. Neither WhatsApp, Meta, nor any third-parties will have access to the conversations due to this AI summarization feature. Furthermore, this feature will not be available in chats where the Advanced Privacy option is activated.

WhatsApp is making strides in making it easier to keep track of conversations within its application. Recently, a voice message transcription feature was rolled out, which allows users who prefer reading over listening to convert voice messages into text. Soon, we will have access to AI-driven conversation summaries in an upcoming update, the exact date of which has yet to be announced.
