As real-time translation becomes increasingly prominent, highlighted by Apple’s latest AirPods and recent updates to Google Meet, Meta has now entered the conversation…
In recent months, WhatsApp has introduced several new features, from generating summaries for unread messages to incorporating Meta AI. Continuing its development, WhatsApp has launched a new feature in the realm of translation.
Integrated Translations within Chats
As of this Tuesday, WhatsApp has rolled out a new feature that is set to transform how its users engage in international communication. With over 3 billion users across 180 countries as reported by Meta, the messaging platform founded by Mark Zuckerberg aims to simplify interactions between speakers of different languages.
In WhatsApp, users can now translate a received message simply by pressing on it and selecting the “Translate” option.

Users then select the source and target languages, which can be downloaded for future use. This translation feature is available in individual chats, group conversations, and even in news feeds.
For Android users, WhatsApp offers an even more convenient feature with an automatic translation option for the entire conversation thread. In this scenario, all incoming messages can be automatically translated without any additional effort required from the user.
Gradual Deployment on iOS and Android
As stated in the official WhatsApp documentation, and in typical Meta fashion, the rollout of this feature is planned to be gradual.
Initially on Android, six languages are already available including English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. On iOS, the feature launches with broader support, as WhatsApp includes 19 languages such as French, German, Korean, Mandarin, and Italian. In its announcement, WhatsApp noted that more languages will be added gradually.
Privacy Remains a Core Concern for WhatsApp
After several security vulnerabilities were exposed, cybercriminals have not hesitated to exploit any weaknesses associated with WhatsApp.
Facing the skepticism of many of its messaging users, WhatsApp has clarified that the privacy of messages remains protected. Translations are performed directly on the device, without involving WhatsApp’s servers, ensuring that the contents of the conversations stay encrypted and inaccessible to the company.
