On June 9th, the oboes will sound and the bagpipes will ring out in Cupertino as the curtain rises on Apple’s upcoming systems, including the iPhone’s. Between what we’re beginning to learn about iOS 19 and what remains unknown, the scales are still heavily tipped towards mystery. A handful of rumors and a few Apple announcements have started to drop hints. Like every year, but perhaps more so this time, there could be changes in both style and substance.

A New Interface Following visionOS

Firstly, the style, since it’s what we see each time we turn on our iPhone and interact with its interface and apps. The latest update is expected to receive a facelift rather than a complete overhaul like the controversial iOS 7 in 2013, orchestrated by Jony Ive, who became the leading figure in Apple’s interface design. These changes are reportedly under the codename Solarium, which might be related to the transparency and frosted glass seen in some promotional visuals.

The look of iOS has gradually moved away from those radical choices — the interface had been overly simplified — but its essence remains. Time has passed, and the introduction of Vision Pro has allowed Apple’s designers to create a new interface specifically for a device for the first time since the Apple Watch.

The rumors and images about this rumored new interface should be taken with a grain of salt. Some proposed ideas and visuals — like nearly round icons — seem too reminiscent of Samsung to be authentic. However, the newly released Invitations app this year does reflect some potential directions, and it would be surprising if nothing from visionOS is adapted for iOS, where useful, to bring the two environments closer together.
