Google is consistently unveiling updates for Wear OS 6, its operating system designed for smartwatches. A particular update is set to enhance a feature that users often overlook.
WearOS has made significant strides since its introduction. Initially lagging behind Apple’s counterpart, Google’s smartwatch operating system has steadily improved over the years. Although it’s not perfect yet, the overall user experience has notably gotten better with each update. We are now eagerly anticipating WearOS 6, which promises to further enhance the battery life of our smart devices.
To extend battery life even more, many of you choose to turn off the Always-On Display (AOD), which keeps showing the time even when you’re not looking at the watch. This feature becomes less useful as many apps do not support it. If you lower your wrist while an app is open, the screen blurs and the time display overlays on top of it. WearOS 5.1 introduced a developer option that forces app compatibility with AOD, but it’s not ideal. WearOS 6 is set to change that.
WearOS 6 Brings a Valuable Update to a Common Feature Across All Smartwatches
An Android developer blog post reveals that “Wear OS 6 enhances the existing solutions to provide a consistent and continuous display experience across all devices. As part of this update, the main activity from before will remain visible and in the ‘resumed’ state when the device switches to [AOD].” The image below offers a practical example: music controls for ongoing playback remain accessible even when the watch is in Always-On mode (on the right). This makes the feature much more useful.
WearOS 6 will also introduce the new Material 3 Expressive design to our wrists. Some users might have already seen a preview of this in apps like Google Calendar. To ensure a uniform display, the tiles will use the same default typeface, which may vary depending on the watch model. WearOS 6 is expected to be released in a stable version by late summer 2025 at the earliest, or by early autumn. The Pixel Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 8 will be among the first to receive it.
