Python’s ascendancy in the world of programming languages is further reinforced, according to the latest update from the TIOBE index.

“Python Rules the Programming World,” Says TIOBE
This isn’t the title of a dystopian movie or a song; rather, it’s the conclusion drawn from the TIOBE Software’s rankings for May 2025. As a reminder, the TIOBE index measures the popularity of programming languages based on online search queries. Having been named the language of the year in January 2024, Python continues to widen its lead over its competitors (up 2.2% from April 2025). It has now achieved a quarter of the search volume, reaching an all-time high of 25.35% this month—a record!
The figure of 25.35% signifies the highest share ever recorded by a programming language in the history of the TIOBE index, except for Java in June 2001 (which was TIOBE’s inaugural month with far fewer languages tracked) and in October 2001. Python has also set another record: it is the first time a language has held such a significant lead, with more than a 15% gap over the runner-up, C++, analyzes Paul Jansen, Chief Executive Officer of TIOBE Software.
Paul Jansen further elaborates on his analysis: he believes that Python’s rivals still have a chance to coexist because of Python’s relatively poorer performance (often considered a “slow” language) and the fact that it is an “interpreted” language, thus prone to unexpected runtime errors.
This means that critical systems for security and/or real-time must still rely on other languages, but in most other areas, Python is slowly but surely making its way to the top, adds the CEO of TIOBE Software.

Behind Python’s dominant position, the usual trio of languages follows: C++ (9.94%), C (9.71%), and Java (9.31%). Notable changes over the past twelve months include the language Delphi/Object Pascal, which climbed two spots to break into the top 10 (9th), surpassing SQL (10th) and Fortran (11th). Significant gains were made by the R language, which rocketed to the 12th position after moving up the same number of slots, as well as Ada, which rose from 22nd to 13th (+9), and Perl, now 16th (+14 points). While MATLAB dropped three places (17th), the most significant decline was seen in the Assembly language, which fell from 12th to 18th over the year.
Here are the 20 computer languages most sought after by developers in May 2025:
- Python (= same position as May 2024)
- C++ (+1)
- C (-1)
- Java (=)
- C# (=)
- JavaScript (=)

How Are Programming Languages Ranked?
The TIOBE index, established in 2002, aims to gauge the popularity of programming languages within the developer community based on online search activity across approximately twenty search engines (including Google, Amazon, Wikipedia, Bing, etc.). It is updated monthly and helps track the query trends of around a hundred languages.
This index doesn’t determine the best computer language or the one that has produced the most lines of code. However, it is incredibly valuable for aspiring digital professionals and active developers as it provides a comprehensive and current view of programming trends. This is an advantage for those looking to enter this field, as well as for experienced professionals who are deciding which language to choose for starting a new project.
