Enhanced Screen Protection for Apple’s Upcoming Foldable iPhone

The internal display glass of Apple’s anticipated foldable iPhone may feature a protective film that is more durable than those used by competitors. According to the Korean website The Elec, Apple is currently evaluating two types of protective film technologies to overlay on the ultra-thin flexible glass (UTG), previously mentioned in rumors and now confirmed for use. The two materials under consideration are transparent polyimide and polyethylene terephthalate (PET).

Apple appears to favor polyimide due to its harder, more scratch-resistant nature, although it is also more expensive. Initially, Apple had opted for PET last year, but has since shifted towards the stronger polyimide technology. It is suggested that PET might only be used as a fallback option in case of last-minute issues. Korean-based Kolon Industries is reported to be the supplier of this film, while Chinese company Lens Technology is tasked with supplying the glass and applying the protective film.

Apple’s Approach to Foldable Smartphone Technology

Apple has historically been hesitant to enter the foldable smartphone market, particularly due to concerns about the visibility of folds at the center of the internal screen. For its debut foldable iPhone, expected to be part of the iPhone 18 lineup launching in September, Apple is set to employ a new type of display panel dubbed “Advanced Crease-less” developed by Samsung. This panel was recently showcased at CES, drawing significant attention for its impressive performance.

For more detailed information on rumors surrounding the foldable iPhone and other iPhone 18 models, additional sources are available that discuss these developments in depth.
