Start of Production for Apple’s First Foldable iPhone Display by Samsung Display

According to ET News, Samsung Display is on the verge of starting production for the display of the first foldable iPhone. The South Korean manufacturer is reportedly finalizing the setup of a production line at its A3 factory located in Asan, South Chungcheong province. The setup work began in the latter half of last year. The production capacity is expected to be about 1.25 million units per month. This aligns with the figures mentioned by Ming-Chi Kuo last month, which indicated that Apple plans to sell between 15 and 20 million units over the first two to three years of this model’s lifecycle.

Assembly and Testing Phases of the Foldable iPhone

Regarding the assembly of the iPhone itself, Apple is aiming to reach the Engineering Verification Test (EVT) phase by the end of this year, followed by the final verification phase, known as the Design Verification Test (DVT), at the beginning of next year. Barring any issues, mass production would then commence, with a launch expected alongside, or as part of, the iPhone 18 lineup in September 2026.

The internal display of this foldable iPhone is said to measure approximately 7.8 inches diagonally with a 4/3 aspect ratio. The OLED panel and glass are reportedly of high quality, with Apple having placed a strong emphasis on the fold at the center being virtually invisible. The hinge mechanism is also said to be quite costly, with some speculations even suggesting the use of Liquidmetal. Additionally, this model is expected to incorporate several technological advancements first introduced in this year’s iPhone 17 Air, including an ultra-thin chassis, the C1 or C2 modem, and Apple’s first proprietary chip handling both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.
