The Google Play Store is undergoing significant changes. A new feature has recently been introduced on some application listings, which might prove to be invaluable for those tired of wasting time understanding what they are installing.
The Google Play Store has transformed dramatically from what it was just a year ago. In the past twelve months, nearly two million apps have been removed. This extensive cleanup, initiated by Google in 2024, was aimed at making the platform more reliable. Apps that were deemed misleading, unnecessary, or lacking content were eliminated. The objective is to create a cleaner, safer, and more useful space for Android users.
In line with the goal to make navigation more intuitive, Google has quietly rolled out a new feature within the Play Store. Detected by Android Authority in version 46.1.39-31, it is called “Ask Play About This App.” This feature allows users to ask specific questions about an app before downloading it, such as “How does it work?” or “Is there a paid subscription?“
Google Utilizes Gemini to Answer Your Questions About Play Store Apps
Similar to its functionality in Google Drive, where Gemini can now summarize a video’s content without watching it, this AI is employed here to clarify what an app does before you even install it. Once the feature is available, it appears just below the “Install” button. Users can type a question or select from the provided options. The responses are displayed in seconds, automatically generated, to indicate, for example, whether the app includes in-app purchases or how to access certain features.
The feature is not yet available for all applications. Some popular apps, including Google’s own apps like YouTube or Search, are not yet supported. And as with any AI-based tool, some answers may lack precision. However, despite these limitations, this innovation could save significant time for those who are hesitant before installing an app. It represents a step towards a smarter Play Store, one that can guide users rather than just listing applications.
