The curtain falls on the Amazon Appstore. If you’ve downloaded apps from it, or if you still have unused Amazon Coins, here are some important details to note before its complete shutdown.
For Android smartphone users, it’s easy to overlook that the Google Play Store isn’t the only option for downloading apps. Setting aside unofficial stores, there exists a less popular but competitive option. If you’re not familiar, it’s called the Amazon Appstore.
Introduced in 2011, it stands out for its use of Amazon Coins, a virtual currency that can be used to make purchases on specific Amazon applications, and for offering exclusive promotions. Remember, Amazon first and foremost is an online retail platform. Despite these incentives, the Appstore has not met expectations. After about 14 years of operation, Amazon has decided to shut down the Appstore on August 20, 2025.

If you are reading this article at the time of its publication, the Appstore will vanish tomorrow. Note that this closure only affects non-Amazon Android devices. It will continue to operate on devices like Fire TV and Fire tablets. What happens to your installed applications? Amazon has stated that it cannot guarantee their functionality after August 20. This means that some apps may continue to work, while others may not. Testing them individually will be necessary. Ideally, look for the same apps on Google’s Play Store.
Any remaining Amazon Coins in your account will be refunded. Therefore, there’s no need to rush to spend them. Finally, check any subscriptions linked to apps you’ve installed via the Amazon Appstore. Depending on what’s available, you may need to transfer or cancel these subscriptions. This also applies to any automatic renewals. You can manage these directly through the app, or if you no longer have access to it, through your Amazon account on the web.
