Transforming the entire style of a Pixel device with a single action could soon be a reality. Google is exploring a highly anticipated feature in Android 16, potentially incorporating true customization packs.
For years, customization has been a key feature of Android. Brands like Samsung offer on their Galaxy S24 or S25 Ultra complete themes that change wallpapers, icons, sounds, and colors with just one click. In contrast, Pixel users – including those with the recent Pixel 8, Pixel 9, or Pixel 9a – still have to navigate through multiple settings to tweak their phone’s appearance. This is a paradox, especially since these devices are designed by Google to embody the OS in its purest form.
This could soon change with Android 16. In the first beta release (QPR1 Beta 1), Android Authority noticed indications that Google is developing a new feature called “Pixel Themes.” Code within the “Wallpaper and Style” app refers to a “Themes” button and an associated app named “Pixel Customization Packs.” Although this button is not visible by default, it was activated using debugging tools. It then attempts to launch a module not yet present in this beta version, but its name clearly hints at the arrival of complete customization packs that include various visual elements.
Android 16 Introduces a Theme System for One-Click Pixel Style Changes
In this test version, the customization app’s interface has been updated. It now includes a slider to adjust the size of the clock on the lock screen, as well as “Magic Portrait” animated wallpapers. The “Themes” button, although currently non-functional, is expected to enable users to apply a complete theme in a single step: wallpaper, color palette, icons, system sounds, and possibly even animations. This method is similar to what Samsung has long offered on its Galaxy range.
The full range of options that Google will offer remains unknown. The mentioned files do not clarify whether users will be able to create their own themes, or if they will have to use those provided by the company. It is also uncertain whether these packs will be shareable among users or downloadable via a dedicated store. Despite these uncertainties, the introduction of this feature would represent a significant advancement for Pixel owners. It meets a long-standing demand: to customize one’s device easily without multiple steps or the need for third-party apps.
