As a cat parent for over eight years, I’m all too familiar with the unpleasant daily routine of cleaning the litter box. Although it’s a simple task, it’s particularly disheartening early in the morning. However, in recent years, automated litter boxes have emerged, allowing this chore to be delegated. With these devices now being connected, I found the perfect excuse to test one. Petkit, a leading manufacturer in this field, sent me their “Purobot Max Pro Automatic Litter Box with Fixed AI Camera” to explore this new category.

This hefty robot, priced at €700, replaced the two traditional litter boxes previously used by my two cats two months ago. I’ve had ample time to assess its effectiveness, including during our summer vacation when its monitoring capabilities were supposed to be a valuable asset. So, how does the Purobot Max Pro fare? Let’s delve into this review.
A Robot to Clean the Litter After Each Use
An automated litter box incorporates a motor into a traditional model and, through a specific compartment, it separates waste after each visit by the pet, disposes of the waste into a bin, and resets the now clean litter for the next use. Since the cleaning is automated, it’s worth discussing the crucial aspect of safety directly. Honestly, it’s this concern that had deterred me for years from considering this type of product: after reading several horror stories about poorly designed and dangerous robotic litter boxes, I was initially put off.
However, the Purobot Max Pro has significantly alleviated these concerns—I wouldn’t have tested it otherwise. Petkit has equipped the device with a plethora of sensors designed to detect the presence of an animal nearby and immediately halt the motor at any hint of danger. Even more crucially, the mechanism is designed to prevent injury to a cat, even if these sensors were to fail. The device is built around a large sphere, with a wide opening at the front that never fully closes, allowing an animal to escape at any moment. While no design is without risk, this setup reassured me enough to give it a try, and my experience proved that it was both a safe and well-thought-out design.
Upon receiving and unpacking the product, one immediate observation was that the Petkit robot takes up much more space than a traditional litter box. It measures about 65 cm wide, 60 cm high, and 54 cm deep—a substantial size that requires a decent amount of space in one’s home. Additionally, the top part is mobile, which prevents placing anything on top of it. Otherwise, no adjustments are necessary as long as you use clumping litter. The device adapts to different products and the litter our cats were accustomed to posed no issue. Finally, the adaptation time will inevitably vary from one animal to another. I noticed this with our younger cat, who dove into the robotic litter box as soon as it was set up and has used it confidently ever since, whereas the older one was quite skeptical and took about a week to get used to the idea.
The initial setup does take a few extra minutes, especially to correctly place the trash bag, which involves a specific procedure. The setup isn’t complicated, although it does require getting used to initially. On the right side, there’s a fixed, user-accessible part of the litter box. The top is a semi-circle held by magnets, designed for adding a fragrance enhancer and for removing the main sphere for deep cleaning. Below, a drawer protected by a hatch allows access to an 8-liter trash bin and a second fragrance enhancer. This component is the most frequently handled, and Petkit has designed it well, even if it means the bag is non-standard to better fit the elongated cavity.
