OpenAI Trials Group Chats in ChatGPT: Revolutionizing Digital Communication!

Just a few hours after unveiling the latest update to its language model, GPT-5.1, OpenAI introduced group discussions, a feature currently available only in a few countries. Friends, colleagues, and family can now engage in a shared conversation space with each other and with ChatGPT to plan, explore, and inquire. Let’s delve deeper!

Group Conversations in ChatGPT: A Collaborative Exchange Hub

OpenAI describes group conversations as a way to “bring multiple people, along with ChatGPT, into the same conversation”. These function similarly to a private chat with the AI but can include multiple members. The primary goal is to collaborate on projects with ChatGPT’s support, whether planning “a weekend getaway with friends”, “designing a garden”, or more broadly, “making decisions and developing ideas together”.

Group discussions enhance collaboration at work or school. You can create a plan or research a new topic together. Share articles, notes, and questions; ChatGPT will help you synthesize and organize the information.

“Group discussions operate like your usual ChatGPT conversations, except now other people can join in”, adds OpenAI, noting that responses are managed in the same way as traditional use, automatically selecting between conversational and in-depth research models for each query. Furthermore, group conversations are “distinct from private conversations” in one aspect: “Your personal ChatGPT history is never shared with other participants.”

A Chatbot with Enhanced Social Understanding?

Available to all users in New Zealand, South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan, this feature equips ChatGPT with a special capability. OpenAI explains that its chatbot exhibits “new social behaviors. It follows the conversation thread and decides when to respond and when to stay silent based on the context”. Users can mention it to get a direct response, and it can reply using emojis or user profile pictures, with which it can “create personalized and fun images within the conversation”.

In a “pilot phase” with limited rollout, this new option reflects OpenAI’s commitment to creating more collaborative spaces for its AI’s use. However, it’s not unique. Microsoft’s Copilot allows up to 32 people to join a conversation via a link. OpenAI, on the other hand, has not disclosed how many members can be invited, nor has it announced plans to expand the feature to additional regions.
