On Wednesday, August 13, 2025, Google announced several enhancements to Gemini, its AI assistant, featuring two new capabilities: “Personal Context” and “Temporary Chats”. The first function allows the AI to remember past conversations, while the second facilitates ephemeral exchanges that won’t be saved. Let’s delve into the details!
Automatic Memory for Past Exchanges in Gemini
With the introduction of Personal Context, Gemini is finally catching up with its competitors. Enabled by default, this feature allows the AI to store certain details mentioned during conversations, such as your interests, profession, preferred formats, or previously shared factual information. The aim is to streamline interactions and reduce repetition in each new session.

When this setting is activated, Gemini retains essential details and preferences you’ve shared, leading to more natural and relevant conversations as if you were working with a partner already familiar with the context.
Unlike the previous “Saved Info” option, which required manual input, this memory is built automatically. Google states that users maintain control by allowing them to view, modify, or delete this information at any time in a dedicated section of the settings.
Currently, Personal Context is available on Gemini 2.5 Pro in select countries and will soon be extended to Gemini 2.5 Flash and other regions. This development brings Gemini closer to features already adopted by competitors like ChatGPT or Claude, which has also recently acquired a memory feature.
Ephemeral Conversations that Vanish after Three Days
Contrasting with the persistent memory, Google introduces temporary chats in Gemini, a mode designed for brief interactions that leave no trace. When activated, the chatbot does not keep the conversation in the history, does not use it to personalize future responses, and does not include it in its training data. The discussions are automatically deleted after 72 hours. This functionality is particularly suited for users who wish to ask sensitive questions, seek quick advice, or test an idea without retaining it.
The temporary chat functions like a private session. The AI responds with all its usual capabilities, but the exchange is isolated from the rest of your activity. Google aims to offer more flexibility in managing privacy and also facilitate certain collaborative uses. The feature, already available on ChatGPT for many months, follows the same deployment schedule as the personal context, first on Gemini 2.5 Pro then on Gemini 2.5 Flash.
Google Renames a Data Usage Setting
In addition, Google will rename the “Gemini Apps Activity” setting to “Keep Activity,” with a new implementation set to start on September 2. When this option is enabled, a sample of the files, images, or other content you upload to Gemini may be used to contribute to “improving Google’s services.” The company clarifies that this is a limited processing, aimed at enhancing its models and features.
In the coming weeks, the “Gemini Apps Activity” setting will be renamed to “Keep Activity.” When this setting is enabled, a sample of the content you will upload in the future can be used to contribute to the improvement of Google services for all users.
If you prefer not to have your data used in this way, you can disable this option at any time or opt for the “Temporary Chat” mode to avoid any incidental data collection. Users who have already disabled “Gemini Apps Activity” will have this preference maintained after the name change. Google intends to make this setting more explicit, although any changes in the data collection policy should be closely watched.
