Netgear Orbi 370 Review: Experience Cutting-Edge Wi-Fi 7 Mesh System, Lacks 6 GHz Support

Test du routeur mesh Netgear Orbi 370 : un kit Wi-Fi 7 complet, mais sans 6 GHz

Netgear has recently unveiled an exceptionally affordable Wi-Fi Mesh kit that supports the latest trending standards. The Orbi 370 kit marks the American brand’s aggressive move against its direct competitors.

The Netgear Orbi 370 kit is a Wi-Fi 7 Mesh system designed to provide next-generation wireless networking to all mobile devices. Our review unit includes one router and two satellites capable of covering an area of over 300 square meters.

The relatively low price for an Orbi kit is primarily due to the absence of the 6 GHz band. This limitation significantly restricts the wireless performance of these units, allowing them, at best, to reach the raw throughput speeds of Wi-Fi 6. However, Netgear has equipped these units with 2.5 GbE RJ45 ports, although the number of ports could be restrictive.

At 350 euros for a three-device kit (one router and two satellites, with Netgear maintaining the distinction), the Orbi 370 set is one of the most accessible Orbi references, similar to the Orbi 350 in its era.

A Much More Compact Tower Design

The units in the Orbi 370 kit are identical and resemble a more compact version of the Orbi 970. This is perhaps one of their main strengths, as they are considerably more discreet compared to other Wi-Fi Mesh kits from the brand we have previously reviewed. Measuring just about 20 cm in height and less than 10 cm in width, they can easily fit on a bookshelf or a ledge.

The devices are primarily made of plastic and are almost entirely white. They have a streamlined, airplane wing-like design with vents on their upper edges to allow the internal components to breathe. The build quality is decent, although they lose the premium feel of the Orbi 970.

The front features the range’s logo and a discreet indication LED at its base, which can be turned off in the product settings. The connectivity, located at the rear, is the only feature distinguishing the router from its two satellites. The router benefits from two 2.5 GbE RJ45 ports, while the satellites have only one.

Besides this single difference, each unit has an association button and an identical power connector. The package includes the necessary power adapters and a single flat RJ45 cable.

Status Quo on Features

There are no new developments regarding features. Netgear continues to offer the same mobile application, which hasn’t changed a pixel in many years. The app is relatively limited and provides a quick overview of the network and connected devices. Its main purpose is to manage the Armor security suite and parental controls—both of which are paid and separate features requiring an additional annual subscription.

Armor offers comprehensive protection as it includes an antivirus and a VPN for up to 50 devices. However, this solution is not included for a year with the purchase of the Orbi 370 kit. Like the parental controls, buyers will only receive a discount on the usual annual rate.

For more advanced features, users will need to turn to the web interface, which also remains unchanged but offers many advanced features that will primarily appeal to seasoned users. It is advisable to activate WPA3 authentication on the Wi-Fi network broadcasted by the kit to fully benefit from all the features of Wi-Fi 7.

Decent Performance Despite Lack of 6 GHz

Although labeled Wi-Fi 7, the Orbi 370 kit’s units have only two bands available and thus omit the 6 GHz band. This technical choice, which likely allows the brand to offer the kit at such an attractive price, will significantly impact the raw wireless performance.

Our testing protocol remains unchanged and involves a coverage audit with a single unit in a modern apartment of about 80 m². We then perform various throughput measurements at different points in this dwelling using a computer equipped with an Intel BE201 chip compatible with Wi-Fi 7. The server used for this measurement is connected to one of the 2.5 GbE ports on the Orbi router.

Under optimal conditions, we easily achieve a stable throughput exceeding 1.3 Gbps in both directions. The absence of the 6 GHz band is noticeable, but the results are equivalent to those of an excellent Wi-Fi 6 kit. However, the throughput drops significantly once at a good distance from the router, stabilizing without too much difficulty above 400 Mbps. In this regard, the much more expensive Orbi 970 performs much better, thanks to its additional band and better coverage. Indeed, our coverage audit clearly shows a significant drop in signal strength in the farthest rooms.

Netgear does not provide technical information on the band used for the link between the router and its satellites. It is therefore difficult to determine if a part of the 5 GHz band is dedicated to them. It appears not, as the performance when connected to the router does not drop when a satellite is added. However, a throughput test from a device connected to one of the satellites barely exceeds 600 Mbps. As often, the use of satellites is recommended mainly to improve coverage rather than raw throughput.

The power consumption of the units is reasonable, oscillating between 5 and 10 W depending on their demand. This is, for example, more than twice less than what the Orbi 970 kit consumes, which in return offers much more convincing performances.

Pricing and Availability of the Netgear Orbi 370 Kit
