A few months ago, Microsoft announced that it would end support for its Windows 10 operating system on October 14, 2025. This means it will no longer release free software updates, security patches, or technical support.
However, the tech giant announced a three-year extension during which it will continue to offer support for its Microsoft 365 suite and its applications, allowing Windows 10 users to access future updates until October 10, 2028. This includes programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, among others.
The company explained that this move aims to “help maintain security until the transition to Windows 11”.
Slower Adoption of Windows 11 than Expected
Windows 11 was released on October 5, 2011. The tech company employed an aggressive strategy that frequently encouraged Windows 10 users to upgrade for free to version 11 of the operating system.
It also tried to position this operating system as the platform for leveraging new technologies, such as AI features not available in previous versions. However, these efforts have not yielded the expected results.

On one hand, the stringent hardware technical requirements prevented many users from upgrading and maintaining the new product. The redesigned start menu and other functionality changes also faced criticism.
As of April 2025, Windows 10 still dominated the global market share among different Windows versions at 52.9%, while Windows 11 only holds 43.7%, though it is on the rise. Over the next three years, this gap may close even further, although the adoption rate has not met Microsoft’s expectations.
