For several years now, both parents and health professionals have been increasingly worried about a critical issue: Are social media platforms contributing to depression among the youth?
Public health investigations, like those conducted by Santé Publique France, have noted a near 10% increase in depression rates over just four years. However, until recently, no direct link had been established with social media usage.
Daily Social Media Usage: From 7 to 73 Minutes
The latest findings from the NIH (National Institutes of Health) highlight a concerning trend among younger users. Over the past three years, the average daily time spent on social media by these users has skyrocketed from 7 minutes to 73 minutes.
Furthermore, a study published in JAMA Network by the NIH, featuring researchers Jason M. Nagata, Christopher D. Otmar, and Joan Shim, indicates that depressive symptoms among the youth have increased by 35% in relation to social media use.
Are Increasing Depression Rates Linked to Social Media?
Although the NIH study quickly draws connections between depressive states in young people and their social media habits, researchers remain cautious about these findings.
According to Dr. Jason M. Nagata, the lead researcher, the current data does not conclusively determine whether social media causes depressive symptoms, exacerbates them, or if their occurrence was inevitable.
Proactive Measures by Digital Giants?
As this study involving nearly 12,000 children raises numerous questions among parents, digital corporations like Meta are already preparing for potential future regulations.
Since last September, Instagram has introduced a special account type for teenagers, which even employs artificial intelligence to detect adults masquerading as minors.
Similarly, TikTok has taken steps in 2023 to limit daily usage to one hour for younger users. However, these measures may prove insufficient should stricter regulations come into force.
