Apple has adopted an annual naming scheme for its operating systems, now naming them after the upcoming year. This includes iPadOS 27, which is designed for its highly popular tablets.
This year’s WWDC may mark the last one under CEO Tim Cook’s leadership and it’s packed with updates for the iPad’s operating system.
With iPadOS 27, Apple appears to be focusing on enhancements rather than introducing major new features, aiming to refine the user experience.
Liquid Glass Enhancements
Liquid Glass, one of Apple’s most controversial design features, is not going away in iPadOS 27. In fact, Apple is doubling down on it with more Liquid-themed icons.
Additionally, Apple is introducing a new slider tool in iPadOS 27, which allows users to adjust the opacity of Liquid Glass, providing options to make it more transparent or nearly opaque.
This adjustment is a strategic design choice that accommodates both fans of the transparent look and those who prefer less transparency.
Enhanced Child Safety Features
Apple is significantly expanding its parental control options in iPadOS 27, with upgrades to screen time management and better integration of these controls within apps.
“At Apple, our goal has always been to develop technology that not only enhances lives but also ensures safety,” stated Sumbul Desai, Apple’s vice president of Health and Fitness. “We believe that digital safety should be tailored to meet the unique needs of each child.”
Advancements in Apple Intelligence
Apple is deploying new models that operate both server-side and on-device, promising enhanced image processing capabilities. However, the most advanced on-device model will be exclusive to iPads equipped with the M4 chip, excluding older and more affordable models.
One of the most significant updates is the integration of new Siri capabilities directly into the OS, allowing for voice-activated searches and responses similar to other AI chatbots.
The newly named Siri AI promises more interactive and conversational capabilities, including a dedicated app and a redesigned interface.
The conversational nature of Siri AI was showcased through a demonstration where it was used to plan a World Cup viewing party, complete with schedules, menu planning, and even retrieving past message suggestions.
On iPadOS, Apple introduced a pop-out Siri conversation window, which supports seamless interaction across Apple devices.
Additionally, the on-screen awareness feature, although not detailed, was mentioned as a new functionality.
Siri AI is also set to provide writing assistance and a system-wide proofreading tool, which will be particularly useful for those who do a lot of writing on their iPads.
Apple emphasized that privacy remains a central focus, especially regarding the new AI features on iPad.
iPadOS 27 Release Date
Apple is sticking to its usual release schedule, with Tim Cook announcing a fall release for iPadOS 27, alongside the launch of a beta version.
