Apple’s Plans for OLED Screens in Future iPads
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has started working on incorporating an OLED display into the iPad Air. However, this update won’t be part of the next release featuring the M4 chip, which is expected to arrive in the spring. Instead, the transition to OLED technology is slated for a “future generation,” though it remains unclear whether this will happen with the M5 model anticipated in 2027. This is a plausible scenario, especially since the iPad Air costs more than the iPad mini, which is set to switch to an OLED panel by 2026.
Advantages of OLED Technology
OLED screens are already used in the iPad Pro and offer several benefits. These include superior contrast with what are often referred to as “true blacks,” higher brightness, and lower power consumption. Additionally, OLED screens are thinner and lighter. Apple plans to extend the use of OLED displays across its range gradually, but due to their high cost, the company logically prioritizes upgrading its high-end models first. Regarding Apple’s budget-friendly models, there are currently no plans to equip the entry-level iPad with an OLED screen, as it’s financially unfeasible at this stage.
