Is CarPlay Compatibility a Crucial Selling Point for iPhone Users?
According to a BMW interface executive interviewed by BMWBLOG, the necessity of CarPlay for iPhone users might just be a myth: “People claim they use CarPlay for navigation wherever they drive. I can assure you that this is not true.” BMW has analyzed data from 10 million vehicles, observing user behavior: “We can monitor our customers’ activities, the types of commands they use, and under what driving conditions they use them. […] They have started to use our own navigation system. Although users keep their phones connected to CarPlay, it is primarily for specific applications,” such as messaging.

BMW has chosen not to adopt CarPlay Ultra, unlike many other manufacturers who do not wish to relinquish control of their vehicle’s user interface to Apple. Instead, BMW aims to promote its proprietary iDrive X system. In response to BMW’s stance, Apple officially commented on the matter, stating: “The article describes the preference for CarPlay as an ‘anecdotal myth,’ yet solid evidence supports this preference, such as the 2024 J.D. Power APEAL study, which shows that ‘the average satisfaction score for built-in infotainment systems is 805, but it rises to 832 for Android Auto users and 840 for Apple CarPlay users.’ This indicates that customers favor the simplicity of using their own phone over the systems provided by manufacturers.”
