Apple’s Pricey iPad Air Magic Keyboard Folio: Explore 8 Affordable Alternatives!

March 31, 2026

Apple’s iPad Air Magic Keyboard Folio is way too expensive, so I tried these 8 cheaper alternatives to see which is best

Which Option Saves Money While Maintaining Productivity?

Seeking to transform your iPad Air into a more functional device, you may consider adding a keyboard case. When evaluating the iPad Air M4, I was provided with Apple’s Magic Keyboard Case to test. While it performed admirably, allowing me to type nearly as quickly as on a standard keyboard, the $269 price tag—almost half the cost of the iPad Air itself—was hard to justify. Additionally, the lack of backlighting on Apple’s keyboard made it less user-friendly in low-light conditions.

Fortunately, numerous companies offer more affordable alternatives to Apple’s keyboard case. I tested eight different models to determine which one best complements your tablet. Each model was assessed using the Speed Typer iPad app, where I conducted three timed tests to calculate average speed and accuracy.

Each keyboard case was evaluated based on design, price, and typing performance, with each criterion rated on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest.

More details below

Belkin Pro Keyboard Case with Magnetic Stand

Among the more premium options tested (yet still around $100 cheaper than Apple’s version), the Belkin case stands out with its soft-touch finish and sturdy design, weighing 1 pound 7 ounces. It features five rows of keys, requiring the use of a function button to access iPad-specific controls. The backlighting offers only one color option, but its brightness can be adjusted directly via a dedicated key, which is a convenient feature.

In typing tests, I achieved an impressive average speed of 61 words per minute with a 99 percent accuracy rate, the highest among all tested cases, including Apple’s. However, the large touchpad occasionally registered unintended touches, disrupting the typing process and requiring multiple test restarts.

Dancesoul Keyboard Case for iPad Air 11 inch

This model, sold under various brand names including Dancesoul and Wiwu on Amazon, offers a solid build at a competitive price, closely resembling Apple’s design with its oval-shaped hinge and integrated USB-C port. It features a dedicated row for iPad controls, enhancing usability.

Despite its appealing design and robust build, the typing performance did not meet expectations. With an average speed of 50 words per minute and a 96 percent accuracy rate, it was the least impressive among the cases tested.

ESR for iPad Air 11 Inch Case with Keyboard

The ESR case is uniquely designed with a detachable upper section that can be rotated for both portrait and landscape use, a feature not found in other models. It also includes a slot for storing a stylus. While the protective capabilities are limited compared to heavier models, the flexibility it offers is unmatched.

The typing experience on the ESR case was solid, with an average speed of 61 words per minute and a 98 percent accuracy rate, tying with the Belkin for the fastest performance.

Concluding Thoughts

Overall, the ESR case emerged as my top choice among the iPad Air cases evaluated, scoring 25 out of a possible 30 points. It hits a sweet spot with its moderate price and innovative features like the stylus slot and the ability to use the iPad in multiple orientations.

For those on a budget, the typecase model also stands out, offering great functionality and a 360-degree swivel feature at a price significantly lower than many competitors. If durability is a priority, the Zagg case may be the best option, though its design and connectivity could be improved.

Ultimately, while the iPad Air might not be as affordable as some alternatives for mobile productivity, these keyboard cases prove that you don’t need to spend a fortune to enhance its functionality.
