Screen production launch hints at an imminent release

Recent developments suggest that Samsung and LG have initiated the large-scale manufacturing of OLED screens for the upcoming M5 iPad Pro, lending credibility to the speculations of an October launch.

Reports from ZDNet Korea, as relayed by MacRumors, indicate that both Samsung and LG will be producing the displays for all sizes of the new model. In the previous generation, Samsung was responsible for the 11-inch version while LG handled the 13-inch variant. This shift in production strategy could be a strategic move by Apple to broaden its base of suppliers, potentially smoothing the pathway for the anticipated 2026 release of the OLED-equipped iPad Mini and the 2027 iPad Air.

Additional reports reinforce the expectation of a 2023 debut for this device. Notably, Mark Gurman reported in March that the iPad Pro was in its final testing stages. Furthermore, there was news in February about Apple commencing mass production of the M5 processor. These pieces of information imply that the device is nearly ready for public release.

Insights into the iPad Pro

While there haven’t been many revelations about significant upgrades to the new iPad Pro, Gurman has hinted that major updates might not surface until next year. Nonetheless, the M5 chip is expected to deliver superior graphics and an improved Neural Engine, which would significantly enhance Apple’s computing capabilities.

Although there have been some delays in Apple’s advancement to a 2nm manufacturing process, the M5 chip is likely to be produced using the existing 3nm technology, similar to its predecessors. Despite this, the performance of the new iPad Pro is not expected to be heavily impacted. The M5 chip is also slated for integration in an upcoming MacBook Pro, which is anticipated to launch simultaneously.

For enthusiasts of OLED technology, it might be disappointing to learn that an OLED display revamp for the MacBook might not occur until 2026. However, when it does happen, it’s expected to significantly enhance visual quality and battery life, much like it did with the OLED iPad Pro.
