Apple is reportedly planning to launch its first OLED iPad mini, which could be introduced as soon as October of this year, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. This marks a significant update for Apple’s smallest tablet, stirring both enthusiasm and concern.
The most recent update to the iPad mini came in October 2024 with the release of the iPad mini 7, which continued to use the design first introduced in 2021 and included an A17 Pro chip.
The forthcoming 8th-generation iPad mini, currently known under the code name J510, is rumored to not only feature a faster chip but also an OLED screen. It remains unclear if the new model will also present other design enhancements such as reduced bezels.
Gurman also reports on other upcoming iPad models. An updated entry-level iPad, identified as J581, is expected early next year. New versions of the iPad Air, available in 11- and 13-inch sizes and known by the codes J807 and J837, are anticipated to launch in the spring of 2027, alongside new iPad Pro models.
It is still uncertain whether the new iPad Air models will feature the same OLED upgrade as the iPad mini 8. Should the iPad Air continue with the existing Liquid Retina display, it would be the only model in the lineup without an OLED screen.
The current price for the iPad mini 7 starts at $599, which is $100 more than its initial price due to recent Apple price increases. With the ongoing RAM crisis affecting costs, it’s challenging to predict the price of the upcoming iPad mini 8, though the inclusion of an OLED panel will likely increase its price.
