Apple Unveils WatchOS 26 Features at WWDC
During the recent WWDC event, Apple introduced the upcoming major updates for watchOS 26, designed for the Apple Vision Pro virtual reality headset. Unlike other Apple systems that have switched to the new Liquid Glass design, visionOS has not undergone significant interface updates. This is because visionOS itself has been the inspiration for the design of other systems. Nevertheless, visionOS 26 will feature several significant enhancements.
Introducing Widgets on visionOS 26
Widgets are making their debut in visionOS 26, featuring a spatial version with various customization options including size, border, color, and depth levels. Users can place these widgets in specific locations; for example, Apple demonstrated a clock attached to a wall, weather information, or a photo that simulates a window looking out into the external world. Widget selection is managed through a new app simply named Widgets. Developers will also have the ability to incorporate their own widgets through their applications.
Shared Experiences in visionOS 26
visionOS 26 introduces capabilities for shared experiences, where multiple users wearing an Apple Vision Pro can view and interact with the same content simultaneously. This is ideal for collaborative work on 3D objects in augmented reality or even for watching a movie together.
Enhanced Persona Quality
The quality of Personas has significantly improved in visionOS 26. Apple has implemented a new setup process that remains quick yet is much more effective. It allows for finer adjustments in appearance, including the option to choose from over 1,000 different pairs of glasses.
Advancements in Spatial Photos and 3D Content
visionOS 26 has enhanced its algorithm to create more realistic spatial photos. Additionally, Safari now supports 3D photos and videos, which web developers can integrate. The system also natively supports Insta360, GoPro, and Canon content in 180 degrees, 360 degrees, and wide field of view formats.
Support for New Third-Party Accessories
The update includes support for new third-party accessories such as the Logitech Muse spatial stylus, which allows writing in mid-air, and the PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers with six degrees of freedom, enhancing the gaming experience.
Additional New Features
Several other minor updates include Look to Scroll, which allows scrolling with eye movements, a revamped Control Center, and the ability to unlock an iPhone while wearing the Apple Vision Pro. Other features are call transferring from the iPhone, more responsive hand tracking, and support for folders on the home screen. Additionally, visionOS 26 includes various updates previously announced for iOS 26, such as enhancements to the Messages app and the Image Playground update with ChatGPT integration.
Release Timeline
visionOS 26 entered its developer beta phase following the WWDC announcement and a public beta version is scheduled for release in July. The final version is expected to launch in early fall, potentially September, barring any delays.
