Up to now, only certain models of the iPad Pro have transitioned to OLED screens. However, this technology is set to be adopted by other models in the near future.
Last month, technology journalist Mark Gurman from Bloomberg suggested that the upcoming iPad mini 8 will be equipped with an OLED screen and could be released “as early as next year.” A credible source has since confirmed the use of OLED technology and pinpointed the likely release to late 2026.
A post on Weibo by Instant Digital mentions that the iPad mini will be the first among its counterparts to receive an OLED upgrade, while there appears to be no similar plans for the iPad Air at the moment, according to a rough translation via Google Translate.
This OLED screen integration is significant. OLED technology allows each pixel to emit its own light, offering perfect contrast and deeper blacks that LCDs cannot replicate.
While this timeframe spans six months, it’s more plausible that the launch will occur around September or October 2026.
When asked if the new panel would still operate at 60Hz, Instant Digital responded with uncertainty, mentioning that “the earliest release would be in the third or fourth quarter of next year, we’ll see then.”
This timeframe excludes a spring release, unlike the iPad mini 5 which was unveiled in March 2019.
Considering past release patterns, with the iPad mini 7 launching in October last year and the iPad mini 6 in September 2021, a similar launch window in 2026 seems likely.
Aside from the OLED update, there has been one other significant leak regarding the iPad mini 8. In August, a major leak from Apple’s own software code revealed ten upcoming products including the next iPad mini, which is expected to use the same A19 Pro chip as the newly released iPhone 17 Pro.
This is a notable upgrade from the iPad mini 7’s A17 Pro chip, which is used in the older iPhone 15 Pro. Performance benchmarks from Geekbench show the A19 Pro chip averaging scores of 2,885 in single-core and 7,186 in multi-core tests, compared to 3,763 and 9,745 for the A17 Pro, respectively.
If the new model launches in October, the chipset will no longer be Apple’s most recent, as the A20 Pro-powered iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Fold are expected to debut a month earlier.
The year 2026 marks Apple’s 50th anniversary, and it is anticipated to be a landmark year with the release of no less than 15 new products. For many fans, however, the highlight will be the new iPad mini with its cutting-edge OLED display.
