New Standard for Smart Locks to Emerge This Year

A new standard dedicated to smart locks, named Aliro, is set to be introduced this year by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA). The CSA, which previously developed the Matter standard for home automation, will also base Aliro on this platform. In a statement released to The Verge, Nelson Henry, the chair of the Aliro steering committee, confirmed that the standard is complete and ready for market launch:

We are excited to announce that Aliro, the CSA’s standardized protocol for identification and communication, which allows smartphones and trusted connected devices to act as digital keys for smart locks and readers at your home and other badge-using locations, has passed its final verification stage and will be launched in the first quarter of 2026.

Development and Features of the Aliro Standard

The development of this standard was a collaborative effort involving major tech companies such as Apple, Google, and Samsung, alongside various smart lock manufacturers and chip makers including Allegion, Assa Abloy, Qualcomm, and NXP. The goal is to create a technology similar to the home keys feature in Apple’s Wallet app on iPhones but in a form that will be compatible across all manufacturers. This could potentially be achieved through a simple software update, provided the hardware meets the required criteria. The compatible devices will be able to use NFC, Bluetooth, or Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technologies.

Apple’s Interest in the Smart Lock Industry

Apple has a significant interest in adopting and promoting this standard as swiftly as possible. Rumors suggest that Apple is developing a connected doorbell featuring Face ID, which would logically integrate with various manufacturers’ smart locks. While Apple does not appear to be considering making its own smart lock, it is reportedly exploring potential partnerships with specific manufacturers (like Logitech or Belkin) to create an all-in-one solution. The timeline for this project is still unclear.
