New Update to iOS 26.2 Enhances AirDrop with Unique Code Sharing
The upcoming iOS 26.2 update is set to introduce an innovative feature that allows users to share a one-time code with someone not listed in their contacts. This will enable a 30-day pairing for the AirDrop feature. This update was first hinted at two weeks ago when developers discovered references in the source code of the initial beta release. With the release of the third beta version last night, a new option titled “Manage Known AirDrop Contacts” was added to the AirDrop settings (Settings > General > AirDrop). Accompanying text explains that “you will automatically appear for 30 days to people with whom you have shared a one-time code.”
As of now, the functionality to send this one-time code is not yet active and is expected to be included in a subsequent beta release. Currently, AirDrop offers only two settings when activated: sharing is either restricted to saved contacts or open to anyone, but only for a brief 10-minute window. The final version of iOS 26.2 is anticipated to be released sometime in December.
