So far, Apple’s Ultra chips have been exclusively used in the Mac Studio, but recent insights from Omdia suggest that Apple might be considering the integration of an M5 Ultra chip into an upcoming MacBook Pro. This new model could potentially feature a tactile OLED display and might be unveiled as soon as this fall. There have even been whispers about these new laptops being branded as the MacBook Ultra. Drawing parallels between the name and the chip makes sense, yet technically, it seems highly unlikely. The Ultra chip requires significant power and an advanced cooling system that could be too demanding for a laptop’s compact form.

Technical Constraints of the Ultra Chip
A closer look at the specifications of the Mac Studio, which houses the M5 Ultra chip, reveals that its peak continuous power consumption is a substantial 480 watts. Vadim Yuryev points out that even the M5 Max chip leads to a total power consumption of around 200 watts. In contrast, the MacBook Pro's charger is limited to 140 watts. This means that when a MacBook Pro equipped with an M5 Max chip is operating at full capacity, it may need to draw power from its battery even while plugged in. Considering these factors, incorporating an even more powerful chip into the MacBook Pro seems far-fetched, particularly because it would likely require a significantly thicker chassis to accommodate the necessary cooling system.
