Understanding What an AI Agent Really Is
“I think we can all agree that AI, GenAI, LLMs, etc., represent an unstoppable wave. A wave at least as significant as the internet or mobile revolutions.” Guillaume Laforge sets the stage. To him, the emergence of AI agents marks a shift as monumental as the major infrastructure changes of recent decades.

To establish a solid foundation, the expert categorizes agents into three types: consumer-facing agents (like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini), coding assistants (Gemini CLI, Claude Code), and especially custom-built agents integrated into applications, websites, or business workflows. It’s these latter agents that are driving innovation today as they need to interact with private data, internal tools, or other agents.
There are three main categories of tasks: observation, planning, and action.
Guillaume Laforge explains that an AI agent is a composite system, far more complex than a simple chatbot. “An agent is an LLM, to which you add memory (…) and a very important aspect: step-by-step planning. And steps mean calling tools.” He even offers a real equation for the agent, where each component plays a specific role: LLM (the “brain”) + memory (conversational or long-term) + planning + tools (MCP, API, RAG, executed code…) + a loop of iterations.
This loop unfolds in several successive stages:
- Observe (understand the request, interpret the system prompt, identify the goal),
- Plan (choose the strategy and tools),
- Act (research, API calls, code execution, interaction with other agents, human-in-the-loop),
- Reflect to improve or correct the output.

And there’s also the reflection part: the LLM might think ‘what I did was good, but maybe it lacks a section.’” In other words, an AI agent isn’t just a more sophisticated chatbot: it’s a machine designed to break down and execute complex tasks, shaping how they are conceptualized.
What Really Works: Architectural Patterns Identified by Guillaume Laforge
The Myth of the Fully Autonomous Agent
Guillaume Laforge begins by debunking the idea that agents could self-manage without oversight: “LLMs still hallucinate. Even the best models. The LLM might say ‘call this function,’ and it doesn’t exist. Or it changes the order of tool invocation. Or it invents parameters.” He specifically points out the common mistake of endlessly enriching the system prompt to “channel” the agent: “The larger the prompt, the more the LLMs hallucinate. Garbage in, garbage out.”
Pattern #1: The Conductor
Amid these limitations, one pattern stands out: segmentation. “A pattern that works well is the conductor: breaking it down into small tasks. A search task, a summary task, a synthesis task. The more specialized the tasks, the better they work.”
This orchestration can be achieved through:
- Graph-oriented frameworks like LangGraph,
- Hierarchical agent frameworks such as ADK,
- Workflow engines (n8n, etc.),
- Or traditional programmatic steering.
Guillaume Laforge emphasizes that the specialization of sub-agents increases reliability and reduces hallucinations.
Pattern #2: Rethink the Tools (Rather Than Exposing Everything to the Agent)
Another frequent mistake: giving an AI agent a catalog of raw REST APIs. “The typical anti-pattern is exposing GET, POST resources, etc. It’s better to have business functions.” In other words, the agent should have “business capabilities,” not a technical view of endpoints. Fewer, better-designed tools lead to less confusion.
Pattern #3: MCP, Standardization
Guillaume Laforge then revisits the MCP, a protocol that is quickly becoming standard in the ecosystem: “MCP is a protocol somewhat like USB for tools. A protocol to standardize interactions between agents and tools. Previously, everyone developed their own system. Now, you can use one off-the-shelf.”
This approach eases maintenance. Less “integration glue in each project,” more modularity, and the ability to integrate your own MCP servers with other agents.
Pattern #4: Agent-to-Agent Interoperability
Google is also working on a communication protocol between agents.
“A2A, or agent-to-agent, was launched a year ago by Google, and it defines a protocol between agents. We standardize the idea that an agent can present an identity card with the description of its skills and be multimodal, exchanging messages, creating tasks, and artifacts.” A future where agents might thus collaborate freely, regardless of the framework, language, or platform.
Anti-Patterns: Common Pitfalls Almost Every Team Encounters
Anti-Pattern #1: The “Chatbot Mandate”
Many companies come with a simple directive: “We need a chatbot.” Guillaume Laforge warns: “I see a lot of companies thinking… ‘What if we made a chatbot?’ But often, chatbots are frustrating. Not everything needs to be conversational.”
He encourages exploring multimodal alternatives that are more natural, smoother, and sometimes invisible to the user. “The best integration of an AI agent should be transparent,” he explains.
Anti-Pattern #2: Insufficient Evaluation (Minimal Vibe-Checking)
Agents must be tested as close to the field as possible: “You need to be sure to observe, measure, and react. Models tend to invent responses with force and conviction.”
He stresses collaboration with domain experts and gathering real interactions to create “golden responses.” The evaluation phase is not incidental but central.
Anti-Pattern #3: Silent Confabulation
Without explicit grounding (anchoring responses in specific and up-to-date facts), the agent can generate false yet convincing statements. Hence the importance of citing sources (RAG, references, referrals) and validating outputs immediately through dedicated mechanisms. This approach strengthens trust in generation and is based on a method called IVO, for Immediately Validate Output.
Anti-Pattern #4: “Down the Rabbit Hole,” When the Agent Misleads the Developer
Code agents can also mislead… wrongly. “Coding agents can lead you down the wrong track with assurance, conviction, and aplomb. You need to lift your head, see what you’re doing, and maintain control.”
Guillaume Laforge advises focusing on user value rather than continuously adding features suggested by AI. “Lift your head from the handlebars and focus on the added value!”
