Apple Intelligence: Unlock Your iPhone’s Hidden Mini-ChatGPT That Works Offline!

Apple has often been seen as lagging behind in the AI race, yet with the release of iOS 26, it has subtly introduced a built-in language model in its latest iPhones. The Locally AI app activates this mini-ChatGPT which operates locally and without the need for an internet connection.

With the launch of iOS 26, the latest operating system from Apple, several new features powered by Apple Intelligence have been rolled out. These include instant translation of text messages in iMessages and voice calls in FaceTime through subtitles.

However, these features might seem minimal compared to the capabilities of Cupertino’s chips, which are particularly optimized for generative AI. But this is just the tip of the iceberg: with iOS 26, Apple has natively integrated a more powerful language model into the iPhone than what the company has publicly disclosed. A specific app reveals its true capabilities.

Unlock Apple’s Built-in Language Model on Your iPhone with Locally AI

Developed by French programmer Adrien Grondin, the Locally AI app allows iPhone owners to download various models to run them locally, including Google’s Gemma 3, Hugging Face’s SmolLm 3, Qwen 3, and Meta’s Llama 3. However, it now enables users to leverage the AI capabilities of the latest iPhones (iPhone 15 Pro, 16, and 17) by offering access to Apple’s official model: Apple Foundation.

Since Apple Foundation is natively integrated by Apple into iOS 26, it does not require any download. If you’re familiar with ChatGPT, the Locally AI interface should feel quite intuitive. The AI can assist with finding recipes based on specific ingredients, planning your next trip, composing letters, and even explaining how certain objects work.

Why choose Apple Foundation over ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude? Although Apple’s model is smaller and thus less powerful, it operates entirely locally on your iPhone and doesn’t require internet connectivity. Tests conducted by our colleagues at Numerama show quite impressive results on an iPhone 17 Pro, with responses generated in just a few seconds. Therefore, for simple inquiries (and to reduce your environmental footprint), Apple Foundation could be a good choice. However, there are still some limitations: the model does not process images and, for unclear reasons, sometimes refuses to respond.

Locally AI thus unveils the real power of the latest iPhones and likely offers a glimpse into the future of Siri. But for now, the practical utility of Apple Foundation remains limited: the model, even with Locally AI, can only generate text.
