In February 2025, Apple unveiled the iPhone 16e, succeeding the SE series as the most budget-friendly option in the company’s lineup. There are already rumors suggesting that a successor is underway. Apple has reportedly selected the suppliers for the display of this new smartphone, indicating when it might hit the market.

Apple has consistently maintained its premium branding, even with its more “affordable” products like the Mac mini, the standard iPad, the Apple Watch SE, and the iPhone SE series. Despite their more competitive pricing, these products still promise the quintessential “Apple experience,” featuring Continuity, Siri, long-term software support, smooth and powerful performance, access to the App Store, and more.

However, to lower the costs, Apple has to make some trade-offs. Rather than opting for lower quality components or casings, the company prefers to use those that have been cost-amortized. The iPhone 16e, launched in February 2025, is a prime example. It takes after the iPhone SE series, borrowing many features from the iPhone 14, but differing primarily in its camera setup, USB-C port, and processor.

The Successor to the iPhone 16e to Feature a Recycled OLED Screen

The iPhone 16e heavily relies on recycling, and its successor is expected to follow suit. Rumors have been circulating for months about the development of an iPhone 17e to refresh Apple’s affordable range. A recent leak supports these claims. According to the Korean online daily The Elec, Apple plans to repurpose the iPhone 16e’s display for its successor. This is a 6.1-inch OLED panel previously used in the iPhone 14. The display will be manufactured by BOE and Samsung Display, with LG Display providing additional support.

As per the Korean daily, this information hints at a launch window for the iPhone 17e: Spring 2026, just over a year after the iPhone 16e’s debut. This timeline aligns closely with predictions from Ming Chi Kuo, the renowned Taiwanese financial analyst. The reuse of components is likely to extend beyond just the screen, incorporating other elements from the iPhone 16e—and thus from the iPhone 14—as part of Apple’s strategy to reduce costs, lower selling prices, and remain competitive against Chinese and Korean brands.

Possible Biannual Launches for iPhones?

The iPhone E series, which takes over from the iPhone SE, plays a crucial role in Apple’s strategy. It helps the company maintain strong sales volumes by targeting market segments it has overlooked for the past decade in favor of high-end models. It also increases the number of iPhone users, potentially boosting customers for its other product lines (Mac, Watch, iPad) and services (iCloud, App Store, Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Fitness).

Moreover, Apple might use the iPhone E series to split its smartphone launches into two phases, keeping the Pro models for September and scheduling the E, “standard”, and Plus models for April. This approach would give Apple two opportunities to market its smartphones annually, similar to Samsung’s strategy with the Galaxy S in winter and the Galaxy Z in summer.
