Amazon has recently unveiled two fresh iterations of its Kindle Colorsoft — a new, more wallet-friendly 16GB model priced at $249, and a Kids edition designed specifically for younger users to enjoy the color e-ink technology.
The premium Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition continues to be sold at its original price of $279, which includes several advanced features such as an adaptive front light, wireless charging capabilities, and 32 GB of internal storage. Similar to other Amazon products designed for children, the Kindle Colorsoft Kids is packaged with a robust child-proof cover, a complimentary one-year subscription to Amazon Kids+, comprehensive parental controls, and a two-year warranty for peace of mind.
The protective cover is available in two designs: Fantasy River and Starlight Reading. This edition also supports educational tools including the OpenDyslexic font, and comes with Bluetooth for pairing with top-tier wireless headphones to enjoy audiobooks. Effective parental controls can be managed through the Amazon Parent Dashboard.
Having tested the Kindle Colorsoft upon its release last year, it has since become my primary e-reader. Although I am quite fond of this device, its high cost has made it challenging to recommend. While the $249 price point remains high in comparison to the $159 Kindle Paperwhite or the even more affordable $109 basic Kindle, the $30 price reduction does make it somewhat more approachable.
The introduction of the Kindle Colorsoft Kids isn’t particularly unexpected, yet it presents a valuable option for parents interested in introducing their children to the Colorsoft experience. Although the $269 price tag is relatively high, the inclusion of a year-long Amazon Kids+ subscription provides considerable value, offering a variety of child-appropriate books, movies, educational apps, and games. The included protective cover is also a thoughtful addition to safeguard the device.
The 16GB Kindle Colorsoft and the Kindle Colorsoft Kids are currently available for purchase on Amazon. If these prices seem a bit steep, potential discounts during upcoming Amazon Prime Day or Black Friday sales could make them more enticing. We will continue to keep you updated on these developments!
