The social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, has often faced criticism for its algorithm which doesn’t always cater well to its users. However, a potential new feature might soon shift perspectives.
After acquiring the social media entity in 2022, Elon Musk has already made several controversial moves. In November of the previous year, he even claimed to have dismissed 80% of the workforce, drawing ire from many users.
Despite numerous critics arguing that the social network would not withstand these job cuts, and some users even abandoning it for alternatives like Bluesky, the platform has not experienced any significant outages so far.
Moreover, while it might seem that Elon Musk’s interest would lean more towards artificial intelligence, particularly the Grok project, new features might be on the horizon soon.
Possible Replacement for the “Like” Button?
The “Like” button, represented by a heart beneath each post and familiar to all users of X, might soon be phased out. Currently used both as a “like” and a way to bookmark posts on the network, this button could soon be replaced by two different ones.
According to a post by Andrew Hutchinson on the online magazine SocialMediaToday, X is conducting several tests on its interface. Hutchinson, supporting his claim with a screenshot, noted a new icon with a thumbs-up replacing the heart of the “Like” button, similar to Facebook’s approach.
A few hours later, X Daily News, an account on the social network X that regularly shares updates about the platform, revealed another feature…
Introduction of Positive and Negative Voting Buttons
While it’s common to see features being tested among users, it’s rare for apps to conduct multiple tests on the same feature. Although Andrew Hutchinson only noticed a simple replacement of the “Like” button, other users appear to have seen two buttons.
Similar to Reddit, which offers “upvotes” (positive votes) and “downvotes” (negative votes), a screenshot showcased these same buttons within X’s interface.
While X has not yet provided further details about these buttons, their integration could be quite logical. Indeed, they might be used to enhance the platform’s algorithm and also to clear up confusion between the “Add to Bookmarks” and “Like” buttons.
