As AI has already proven its capability to interact on social media platforms, X is gearing up to introduce a feature aimed at bolstering trust within its community.

Following a similar initiative by Meta earlier this summer, Elon Musk’s social network is set to target fake accounts and provide more detailed information about user profiles…

Adding More Context to Each Profile

In a recent announcement on the social network, Nikita Bier, a product manager at X, revealed the upcoming trial of this feature. The platform plans to display additional data on profiles, such as the account creation date, the country of origin, the number of username changes made, and details about how the account is used on X.

By doing so, X aims to enable users to better assess the reliability of the accounts they interact with, especially to combat misinformation.

This means, for example, that a profile claiming to be in New York but showing activity from abroad, or an account that frequently changes its name, could raise suspicions.

As mentioned in the social network update, X will initially test this feature with its employees’ accounts before potentially rolling it out globally. Users will have the option to disable this feature, but such a decision will be visible on their profile, setting up a form of double-edged transparency…

A Step Towards Greater Trust… but with Caution

This new feature is part of a broader effort to combat bot accounts, following the recent removal of 1.7 million spam accounts. Over the past few years, despite facing criticism, Elon Musk has been pushing for reliability and user verification as a major focus, especially as misinformation has surged since 2020.

However, Nikita Bier acknowledged that privacy concerns remain a delicate issue. In countries where freedom of speech is limited, X would only display the country rather than the city of the user, to avoid any risks to the safety of its members.

This push for transparency mirrors recent strategies by Instagram, which has already introduced a tab displaying information like the account’s age, location, and name change history. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, indicated a desire to further expand on this transparency initiative…
