Since its belated launch in December 2023 for European users, Threads has been progressively gaining ground in the social media landscape, having already sparked significant attention by announcing 100 million daily active users just one year after its inception last December.
While Meta has been more vocal about its other social networks this year, including a return to its roots for Facebook announced at the start of the year by Mark Zuckerberg, and the recent debut of Meta AI, which is carving out a market share against ChatGPT and Google Gemini, it is now Threads that is capturing headlines…
Threads Turns Two
Developed by Instagram’s team, Threads officially celebrated its second anniversary this Monday, July 7. Launched originally to compete with Twitter, Meta introduced Threads as an app for “text sharing”, specifically allowing up to 500 characters.
In celebration of its second year, Threads users in the United States were pleasantly surprised to find their profile pictures adorned with a hat, which they could either keep or remove.

350 Million Active Users on Threads

Meanwhile, Bluesky, which saw a surge in new users last year after they expressed their disappointment with X, only counts 4.1 million daily active users out of its 37 million according to the company’s figures.
Growth of Threads or Decline of X?
While the numbers clearly indicate that Threads is increasingly carving a niche for itself in the market, it is worth questioning if this is due to the exodus of many users from X, especially following the highly controversial stances taken by Elon Musk.
However, with substantial investments in artificial intelligence planned by Meta since the beginning of the year, Threads could well enhance its potential in the coming months to attract more new users…
