Apple Pay to Face Competition from PayPal in the EU
Apple will soon have to contend with PayPal as a competitor within the European Union. The American company has announced that this summer in Germany, it will launch a payment service using the iPhone’s NFC chip through the Mastercard network. The PayPal app will be capable of replacing the iPhone’s native Wallet app and can be accessed by double-clicking the iPhone’s side button. This app will introduce specific features such as installment payments and cashback offers in collaboration with select brands. Additionally, a Tap to Pay feature will be available, turning the iPhone into a payment terminal.
Germany as a Testing Ground for PayPal’s Expansion
Germany will serve as a pilot market for PayPal, with plans for broader deployment depending on the success of this initiative. The NFC chip opening on the iPhone (excluding the Apple Watch) applies to the entire European Economic Area, which includes the 27 European Union member countries as well as Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein.
