The end of an era: What happens after October 14, 2025?
Millions in the UK still happily click, scroll, and shop on computers running Windows 10. But ready or not, Windows 10 support is set to end on 14 October 2025. According to a recent Which? survey, not only are millions still attached to their trusty old systems, but many plan to keep using them even after those vital updates stop coming. Like a pot plant you forgot to water, this isn’t a great long-term strategy. Once Microsoft turns out the lights on security support, unprepared users could be left exposed to a world of digital risks.
If this sounds dramatic, consider this: an estimated 21 million people in the UK still own and use a laptop or desktop running Windows 10. Which? arrived at this number after surveying more than 2,000 UK adults, with data weighted to reflect the adult UK population. So, if you’re still on Windows 10, you are most definitely not alone—though that’s little comfort if your device becomes a magnet for malware.
Your options: Upgrade, extend, or switch?
Let’s get practical. Your Windows 10 device’s fate comes down to a few options:
- Upgrade to Windows 11 for free, if your computer is compatible.
- Use Microsoft’s free one-year Windows 10 extension, offered through the Extended Security Updates (ESU) programme. This isn’t automatic: you have to opt in, and you can enrol at no cost if you agree to back up your Windows settings to OneDrive. Otherwise, you might use Microsoft loyalty points—or pay a one-off fee. It’s a temporary fix, but gives you precious time to plan your next step.
- Switch to an alternative operating system, like Linux—free, needs lower specs, and available for desktops or laptops—or, if you’re feeling adventurous and mostly use your device online, transform your old laptop into a Chromebook with ChromeOS Flex.
- Buy a new Windows 11 device for that fresh-out-of-the-box feeling. Which? offers expert guides to navigate the sea of shiny new laptops, all-in-ones, and desktops to choose something that won’t be outdated by next year’s Christmas jumper.
But perhaps most importantly, now is the time to check which version you’re actually running. If it’s Windows 10 (or heaven forbid, something even older), make a plan of action while all the options are still on the table!
Unprepared and unaware: The scale of inaction
Let’s call out the elephant in the Windows: a whopping 72% of respondents didn’t realise that, under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive, retailers must help you safely dispose of your old computer when you buy a new one. That’s right—not only can you upgrade to something speedier, you can finally deal with that graveyard of retired laptops hiding in your cupboard (we know it’s there).
Despite the risks, the survey suggests millions are crossing their fingers, hoping for the best, and planning to soldier on after the update deadline. That’s worrying, because once security support disappears, so does the digital comfort blanket protecting your files and personal information.
But don’t hit the panic button yet. For most people, there’s a free and easy fix: upgrade to Windows 11 if possible, opt into Microsoft’s free one-year extension if needed, then use the extra time to switch operating systems or buy a device built for the future.
Staying safe and getting help
Transitioning away from Windows 10 might sound daunting, especially if you’re not inclined to tinker under your PC’s hood. That’s where support comes in handy. Which? Tech Support is ready to help keep you ahead of the curve. Their experts explain things clearly, so you won’t be left scratching your head—or shouting at your monitor—when making the change.

The only thing worse than missing out on security updates is missing out on your options. Check your device, make your plan, and rest easy knowing you won’t be caught off guard when Windows 10 finally fades into history.
