Updates on MacBook Neo’s Second Generation

According to recent insights from Ming-Chi Kuo, it appears that the upcoming second generation of the MacBook Neo will not feature a touchscreen. Previously, Kuo was the first to disclose back in June 2025 that Apple was developing a budget-friendly MacBook equipped with a 13-inch display and an A18 Pro chip. He even managed to reveal the color options for this device eight months ahead of its announcement. In September, he suggested that Apple was considering adding a touchscreen to the second iteration of this MacBook. However, he has now revised his forecast: “Originally, the Neo 2 was supposed to include a touchscreen to compete with Chromebooks (over 50% of which have touchscreens), but recent checks with industry sources indicate that the Neo 2 might forgo this feature.”

Introduction of Touchscreen in Premium MacBook Pro

In a surprising turn of events, it is the high-end M6 generation MacBook Pro that is slated to be the first Mac to incorporate a touchscreen with OLED technology by the end of this year. Meanwhile, Apple plans to make modifications to macOS 27 this summer to better accommodate hybrid usage, ensuring the system functions seamlessly with both traditional cursors and touch interactions. According to Kuo, the MacBook Air is expected to transition to an OLED display by around 2028 or 2029, with Mark Gurman predicting the earliest shift could occur in 2028. It remains unclear whether this will also include touchscreen capabilities. Notably, the adoption of touchscreen technology is not technically dependent on the shift to OLED displays. This is particularly relevant for the MacBook Neo, which could still incorporate a touchscreen on a less expensive LCD panel.
