This autumn, Apple is set to release iPadOS 26, but you have the opportunity to experience it ahead of time through the public beta. While previous versions of iPadOS have seen only incremental changes, iPadOS 26 is poised to be the most substantial overhaul yet for compatible iPads.
Introducing Liquid Glass and Enhanced Functionalities
Similar to its counterparts, iOS 26 and macOS 26, the new iPad operating system will adopt the Liquid Glass design approach, ensuring a cohesive aesthetic across Apple’s device ecosystem. Visual and Functional Enhancements
The most evident change in iPadOS 26 is the introduction of the Liquid Glass design. Although not overwhelmingly prominent, its influence is noticeable on the lock/unlock screen and within the app folders. The subtle glass-like trim around app borders is particularly striking, and there’s a pleasing blur effect on background items behind your active apps.
If you prefer a cleaner look, you can disable these transparency effects, though I find them visually engaging.
The updated windowing system is a significant improvement, making it easier to manage, resize, and organize multiple app windows. This feature, reminiscent of macOS, integrates seamlessly with the iPad’s touch interface. New window controls include options to close, minimize, resize, and tile windows, enhancing productivity and usability on the device.
Moreover, iPadOS 26 borrows the familiar macOS menu bar, complete with the iconic red, yellow, and green buttons for closing, minimizing, and maximizing windows. The cursor has also been updated to a pointer style, and there’s an integrated search feature for quicker access to various functions.
The Exposé view is another handy feature, allowing you to see all open apps simultaneously, which is great for switching between tasks. This pairs well with Stage Manager and is particularly useful when using an external monitor, allowing for a more expansive workspace.
Refinements to the Files App and Apple Intelligence
The Files app on iPad has been updated to include a new List view, showing more details about documents in resizable columns and collapsible folders. There are also options to customize folder appearances with different colors, icons, and emojis, making them easier to identify. Additionally, dragging a folder to the Dock has been simplified for faster access to frequently used files.
Apple Intelligence has also seen improvements, such as better personalization options for Genmoji and the Image Playground, along with new intelligent actions for creating shortcuts in apps like Writing Tools and Image Playground. The Live Translations feature is particularly effective in apps like Phone, FaceTime, and Messages, automatically translating text into your preferred language.
As I continue to explore the features of iPadOS 26, it becomes increasingly clear that this update is a significant step towards making iPads as functional for daily tasks as the top-tier MacBooks. However, it’s important to note that despite these advancements, the core experience remains distinctly iPad-centric.
