Alongside the Hue Essential bulb, we also had the opportunity to explore another recent addition to the Hue range: the Neon Outdoor Lightstrip. Signify, the company behind Philips Hue, offers a broad selection of outdoor lighting solutions, and this new model is particularly suited for brightening up a garden path or similar outdoor spaces.

We evaluated the 5-meter version, which retails for €200. Additionally, there are shorter (3 meters for €140) and longer (10 meters for €350) variants available, though currently, only the shortest version appears to be on sale on the manufacturer’s website.
Fairly Standard Features
Firstly, let’s discuss the lighting. The strip is designed like a rubber-coated snake. Unlike the indoor versions, the LEDs are not exposed; they are concealed behind an opaque plastic strip that diffuses the light. One feature that is missing compared to a standard strip is the ability to cut it to a specific length. This limitation is due to the need for the strip to be waterproof (it is rated IP671). The strip’s dimensions are 11 mm by 21 mm high, and the light is emitted upwards through the white plastic.
The operating range for outdoor use is quite broad, from -20 °C to 45 °C. However, it’s worth noting that this range might push its limits in the southern regions of France during peak summer; it’s advisable to avoid placing it in excessively sunny spots under those conditions.
The packaging indicates a maximum brightness of 1,100 lumens with a white light set to 6,500 K (which is quite cool), a color temperature range from 1,000 K to 20,000 K, the ability to display 16 million colors, and adjustable brightness from 0.5% to 100%. These are impressive specs for a lightstrip intended to enhance a garden, but it’s not a spotlight as found on some security cameras. For more intense lighting needs, the brand offers the Flux variant, which swaps the opaque plastic for much brighter and more visible LEDs (3,000 lumens).
