Google Photos is set to launch a new feature that will allow users to schedule their photo and video backups with greater accuracy.

Google is steadily rolling out its Material 3 Expressive design across its suite of applications. We’ve previously discussed the latest iteration of the Gboard keyboard, and now we’ve got updates on its implementation in Google Photos. As noted by Android Authority after reviewing the code of the Google Photos app APK (version 7.58.0.853810532), this visual overhaul will also introduce a new functionality.

According to the media outlet, the revamped Google Photos settings menu, under Material 3 Expressive, will feature a backup scheduling tool, which is not available in the current version. This feature is located at the bottom of the backup settings menu and is marked with a calendar icon.

New Backup Scheduling Option in Google Photos

Android Authority was only able to reveal the function within the settings, but could not activate it, indicating that it is still under development. Its exact workings are unknown, but it is expected to allow users to schedule the transfer of photos from their device to Google Photos at a specific time or set a frequency for uploads (daily, weekly, monthly, etc.). Currently, Google Photos backup triggers automatically when connected to a Wi-Fi network, or almost in real-time if mobile data backup is enabled.

Having more control over when Google Photos backups occur can be beneficial if you’re not in a hurry to upload your files to the cloud. This might be the case when you want to sort through holiday, travel, or event photos and videos. It’s not necessary for images you ultimately don’t want to end up on Google Photos, necessitating their deletion from both your device and the cloud later.

Besides, the switch to Material 3 Expressive enhances the readability of the Google Photos backup settings. The options are now segmented into categories with well-defined containers. Icons next to each function make them easier to identify and more visually appealing.
