A redesign of the Google Photos app is on the horizon, and we’ve gotten a sneak peek of its new look. This video highlights the editing interface where users will spend much of their time.
Android 16 has been installed on numerous Pixel smartphones by Google. However, those who have updated their devices have noted minimal changes. This is expected, as a major graphical overhaul with the adoption of Material 3 Expressive isn’t set to roll out just yet. Meanwhile, Google’s apps are also gearing up for this update. On its 10th anniversary, Google Photos has given us a glimpse of what’s to come in its next iteration.
It’s safe to say that the upcoming changes are substantial. Everything is being reorganized and revamped. For now, what we’ve mostly seen is the future look of the editing tools once the update is in place. But instead of just waiting, the team at Android Authority dug into beta version 7.34.0.772224975 of Google Photos to uncover other modifications. Here they are.
Unveiling the New Editing Interface of Google Photos in a Video
Material 3 Expressive heavily influences the design, featuring rounded corners everywhere, generally smoother lines, and an overall more modern appearance. We find that tools have been organized into various tabs (note that the French names may change): Auto, Actions, Annotate, Filters, Lighting, and Color. Fear not, all the familiar options are still there, along with some new additions. For instance, the cropping tool is now found under Actions.
The Auto section includes Enhance, Dynamic and AI Enhance, as well as Portrait blur and the Reimagine function that uses artificial intelligence to expand the frame or alter elements like the sky. Another significant update is the addition of a search bar where you can type the name of a tool or setting and Google Photos will locate it for you without the need to navigate through menus. Convenient.
