eSIMs Set to Dominate: New Report Predicts Surge Due to This Key Usage

According to a specialized analysts’ report, the eSIM market is set to surge in the upcoming years. They are poised to replace traditional SIM cards, especially as they become increasingly preferred by users.

Inserting a SIM card into a smartphone is a familiar action for almost everyone. Initially, it was a straightforward process. However, it became a bit more complex as the SIM cards progressively got smaller. Nowadays, the hassle of dealing with micro or nano SIMs is virtually non-existent since they are crafted to be cut to the required size for any mobile device. Soon, even this will become obsolete.

The gradual phase-out of physical SIM cards can be attributed to the rise of the eSIM. To clarify, an eSIM is a chip that is permanently embedded into a smartphone’s motherboard, enabling the activation of digital SIMs. This eliminates the need for inserting a physical component, as everything can be managed online via an app or website. The benefits are numerous: time savings when switching plans or carriers, elimination of the need for a dedicated SIM slot which frees up space for other components and enhances the device’s waterproof capabilities—factors that are driving the widespread adoption of this technology.

eSIMs to Significantly Replace Traditional SIM Cards Soon

Market analysts from CSS Insight predict that the eSIM market will experience a boom by 2030. It is primarily the travel-specific eSIMs that will see the most significant growth: from 70 million in 2024 to 280 million by the end of the decade. These forecasts are based on the success of companies that specialize in this field. For instance, Airalo has reportedly doubled its customer base in less than a year, reaching 20 million by April 2025.

Currently, there are about 1.3 billion eSIM-compatible smartphones in use worldwide. By 2030, this number is expected to exceed 3 billion. The anticipated release of iPhone models exclusively supporting eSIM in Europe is likely to play a significant role in this widespread adoption.
