Elon Musk Challenges Zuckerberg: Launches XChat to Rival Social Media Giants

XChat is an encrypted messaging system that replaces traditional direct messages on Musk’s platform. It features voice and video calls without the need for a phone number, ephemeral messages, file transfers, voice notes, and emoji reactions.

It is developed using the Rust programming language and incorporates a “Bitcoin-style” encryption system, using public key cryptography to secure communications.

Unlike WhatsApp, which requires a phone number for registration, XChat allows users to communicate without sharing their number, appealing to those who prioritize privacy. Additionally, XChat supports end-to-end encryption and the ability to send various types of files.

However, some advanced features like ephemeral messages and group calls are currently only available to paid subscribers.

How to Use XChat?

Currently, XChat is accessible on the mobile versions of X. Users need to go to the direct messages section to use it. From there, they can record voice notes by tapping the sound wave icon, react to messages with emojis by double-tapping, and make voice or video calls using the corresponding icons at the top of the screen.

Permissions for microphone and camera use are required to make calls.

With over 2 billion users globally, WhatsApp dominates the instant messaging market. However, the launch of XChat presents an alternative that could attract users looking for more integrated services and more flexible privacy options.
