Mark Gurman of Bloomberg has recently shared insights on the upcoming changes to Siri in iOS 27, including its integration with Gemini. He reveals the redesign of Apple’s voice assistant interface, which will now function as a chatbot. This updated version of Siri will be housed within the Dynamic Island on compatible iPhone models, featuring animations and a cursor that mimics the light effect found in the WWDC invitation.

Users will still be able to activate Siri by saying “Siri” or by holding down the iPhone’s side button. Apple plans to introduce a new gesture: “Apple intends to allow users to initiate a new search or information request interface by swiping down from the top center of the iPhone’s screen, from anywhere within the system,” in addition to the existing notification center on the left and the control center on the right. The new menu “will mirror the Siri suggestion interface found in the current version of iOS” featuring eight frequently used apps, recent web searches, options like voice memo recording, and a panel for the weather.

From the new interface located in the Dynamic Island, “users can launch apps, send text messages, check the weather, add appointments to their calendar, search their notes, trigger in-app shortcuts, and perform web searches using Apple’s new search system,” which Gurman often describes as an “answer engine.” The results “appear on a rich text card that emerges from the Dynamic Island.” From there, “a downward swipe opens a chatbot-style conversation in the Siri app.”

Thus, Siri will indeed have its own dedicated app, resembling and functioning similarly to those of Claude, Gemini, or ChatGPT. Its home screen will display a history of past conversations, which can be resumed at any time. This history could be presented in the form of tiles or a simple list. In conversations, users can choose between voice or text input and can attach documents or photos for analysis.

The new Siri will automatically create rich cards for personalities, places, or current topics. It will do the same for the weather, sports scores, and results from user data including notes, text messages, emails, contacts, calendar appointments, and reminders.

Siri will also become more versatile. “In the interface designed by Apple, you can ask the assistant to check your availability before scheduling an appointment, as well as overlapping events. You can also ask the assistant to compose emails, notes, or text messages using information from the web and the content on the device. For instance, you could ask it to create a note on how to fix a car engine or an email detailing your available times.”

As previously mentioned by Gurman, Apple has also “tested solutions for opening iOS 27 to third-party AI agents installed via the App Store,” allowing Siri to delegate tasks to any other AI. Apple would continue its current partnership with ChatGPT but has also tested integrations with Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude.

Gurman also reveals Siri’s integration into the Camera app, which he discussed earlier this month. Siri would now appear as a dedicated mode allowing access to visual intelligence features. “By integrating this feature into the Camera app instead of limiting it to the device’s control button, adoption could be encouraged, and users could become accustomed to visual AI before the launch of future products like connected glasses and AirPods with cameras.”

The interface of the Camera app in iOS 27 will be customizable through a new “Add Widgets” panel. The top row of shortcuts can now be modified, allowing for the integration of more advanced controls like depth of field adjustment, the timer, or Night mode. “These changes aim to make Apple’s Camera software more appealing to experienced photographers.”

Finally, Gurman showcases the interface of a new grammar checker and new AI features aimed at the Photos app with the options to Crop and Extend. “Crop allows for changing the perspective of a photo, while Extend uses AI to generate additional portions of an image. This could potentially complete the bottom part of a building missing from the original photo, or even extend the bottom part of a cut-off building.” Gurman adds that Apple is testing the ability to edit photos via voice or textual commands, though this feature may not be available at the launch of iOS 27 in September. The unveiling of iOS 27 is scheduled for June 8 at the WWDC.
