Following an announcement on X, OpenAI has rolled out new settings that allow ChatGPT users to refine the tone of their interactions with the chatbot more delicately. Adjustments can now be made to aspects such as warmth, enthusiasm, the use of emojis, and bullet lists, all according to individual preferences.
New Sliders to Fine-Tune ChatGPT’s Personality
ChatGPT users now have access to new options under the Customization menu. These settings enable adjustments to various parameters: the level of warmth in responses, the display of enthusiasm by the AI, the use of emojis, as well as formatting elements like headers and bullet lists.
You can now personalize certain features of ChatGPT, such as the warmth of the responses, the enthusiasm, and the usage of emojis.
Each setting provides three levels of adjustment: “More”, “Less”, or “Default”. These options enhance the basic styles already available since last November (professional, candid, quirky, etc.), thus offering a more finely tuned conversational experience with ChatGPT.

Here’s how to access these new settings:
- Click or tap on your profile,
- Select the Customization tab,
- In the Features menu, you can choose “additional customizations in addition to your basic style and tone”,
- Adjust the dropdown menus (see featured image) by selecting “More”, “Default”, or “Less”, opposite the parameter you wish to modify.
A Delicate Subject for OpenAI
The tone of ChatGPT is a sensitive issue for OpenAI. The company has had to navigate varying user expectations throughout the year. This past summer, the fifth version of ChatGPT was perceived as too cold by many regular users. A few days later, GPT-5 was adjusted to be warmer. Since then, OpenAI has been increasingly deploying parameters that allow users to control the personality of its AI.
This approach enables OpenAI to step away from the responsibility of defining the “right” level of enthusiasm, a balance the company has struggled to universally achieve through previous updates. However, this issue extends beyond mere aesthetic preference. Researchers and critics of AI highlight compliant behavior in chatbots as “dark patterns” that could lead to psychological dependency. Some studies even suggest negative impacts on the mental health of the most vulnerable users.
