Delayed Release for AirTags 2 Expected This Fall

Initial speculation suggested a June launch for the AirTags 2, but it appears that enthusiasts will have to wait a bit longer. According to sources at 9To5Mac, Apple has decided to postpone the release of their new tracking device until this autumn. The delay aligns with the software readiness, as the AirTags 2 will be supported by iOS 18.6, which is currently in beta. Importantly, the upcoming iOS 26, set to launch in September and discontinuing support for iPhone XR and XS models, will not be necessary for the new AirTags.

Enhancements in the AirTags 2

While the AirTags 2 may not introduce new features, they are expected to include an upgraded chip that enhances the accuracy of short-range location tracking. This improvement extends the range of the Ultra Wideband technology to 60 meters, up from the current 15 meters, and also offers energy savings to prolong battery life. Apple is also enhancing the security features of the trackers, making it harder to disable the speaker. Additionally, the new AirTags will alert users when the battery is close to completely running out, a step up from the existing low battery notification which still provides several weeks of leeway.
